Ivory Silo Plant Sale and Website Launch!

NEW WEBSITE

We have created a website! Check it out for important details like farm stand hours and dates of farm events like the Plant Sale. Information about who we are and how we grow can be found there too. Of course we’ve gathered lots of photos so you can see the farm in action. www.ivorysilofarm.com

PLANT SALE

Last year’s Ivory Silo Farm Plant Sale was a great success. So we’re doing it again! We are gearing up for an even better sale in 2017 with a more complete selection and some fun new additions. This year’s sale will be held over two weekends at the end of May: May 20th - 21st and May 27th – 28th, from 10am – 4 pm. We’ll have dozens of varieties of vegetables, herbs, and flowers for your home gardens. Please visit www.ivorysilofarm.com/plantsale to read more about the sale!

FARM UPDATES

We are looking forward to the 2017 season. This is the first year that we will both be full time on the farm, and while we operate without employees, we find ourselves with a third member of our farm crew-a most welcome addition! We’ve promised ourselves that we will avoid using his good looks to advertise our business, so you’ll have to wait and meet him at the Plant Sale or Farm Stand…

We’ve been busy starting seeds in our propagation greenhouse. In fact, the house is already full and we are busy preparing a small passive house so we can start moving plants out! We are starting to pot up, so one tray of a couple hundred plants quickly becomes 4 or more trays that all need a spot on the bench! And so it begins.

The Farm Stand will be open from late May until Labor Day, Saturdays and perhaps Wednesdays if we can pull it off. You can know for sure by checking back in with our website. We have a great array of vegetables and herbs planned, and some lovely additions to our flower repertoire.

As you may know, we are passionate about seed issues and save our own seeds on the farm. We love talking to people about the politics and logistics and seed saving, and are working to grow this area of activity on the farm by creating a non-profit. This will enable us to do much more work with varietal preservation and seed saving, as well as enabling us to expand our outreach efforts - which means more farm events that involve you! For example, last fall we held a seed cleaning day on the farm using the bike powered seed cleaning machines that our friend and collaborator Lu Yoder designed and built. We invited people from the community to the farm to try out the machines for their own crops and to participate in cleaning the seeds and grains that we or other farmers grew. We cleaned flint corn, milled flour, and processed a whole mess load of dry beans! It was a fun day for farmers, gardeners, and bikers of all ages. Please see www.ivorysilofarm.com/seedsaving for more about seed saving, or catch us at the stand or during a farm event to learn more.

We are happy to be in touch with all of you and hope you feel the same way too. You can expect an occasional newsletter and farm updates, but don’t worry, we will not be inundating your inbox with Ivory Silo mail. You can contact us any time by using this email address, or get in touch with us on Facebook (theivorysiloproject) or Instagram (ivorysilobill). -Bill, Dee, and Baby Bernie
